As a medical doctor and epidemiologist, Tom focuses on reducing infectious disease threats among peoples of the Arctic region, with special emphasis on indigenous populations. The CDC Arctic Investigations Program is a leader in Arctic health research using epidemiology, laboratory science and policy approaches to detect, understand and prevent infectious diseases and their consequences.
– Clinical certification in Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine
– US Public Health Service officer since 1990
– Graduate of Antioch College, the Mayo Clinic Medical School, Emory University School of Public Health and the CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service
– Represents CDC on the US Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee, which developed the US Arctic Research Plan for 2017 – 2021
– US Representative for the Arctic Council’s Human Health Experts Group
– Co-lead Climate Sensitive Infectious Disease Workgroup, International Circumpolar Surveillance network
